1222 Cartridge Replacement Moen Tub and Shower

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

Replacing the cartridge in a Moen tub and shower is a common task that can be done by most homeowners. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Turn off the water supply to the shower. This can usually be done by turning off the water valve located near the shower or by turning off the main water supply to the house.

  2. Remove the handle of the faucet. This is usually done by prying off the cap on the handle with a flathead screwdriver and then unscrewing the handle screw with a Phillips head screwdriver.

  3. Remove the trim plate. This is the plate that covers the valve body and is usually held in place with screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the trim plate away from the wall.

  4. Remove the retaining clip. This is a small metal clip that holds the cartridge in place. Use pliers to pull the clip straight out.

  5. Remove the cartridge. Grasp the cartridge with pliers and gently pull it straight out. If it is stuck, you can use a cartridge removal tool to help loosen it.

  6. Install the new cartridge. Push the new cartridge into the valve body until it clicks into place.

  7. Reinstall the retaining clip. Slide the retaining clip back into place over the cartridge.

  8. Reinstall the trim plate and handle. Screw the trim plate back onto the valve body and snap the handle back into place.

  9. Turn on the water supply to the shower and test the new cartridge. Make sure the water flows correctly and that there are no leaks.

That's it! By following these steps, you should be able to replace the cartridge in your Moen tub and shower.
